Amman, February 10th, 2022 – HRH Princess Ghida Talal, Chairperson of the King Hussein Cancer Foundation (KHCF) and Center (KHCC), signed an agreement with the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID), for a grant funded by the EU Regional Trust Fund in Response to the Syrian crisis “MADAD”. The agreement was also signed by H.E. Ms. Maria Hadjitheodosiou, European Union Ambassador to Jordan, and H.E. Ms. Aránzazu Bañón Davalos, the Spanish Ambassador to Jordan.
The two-year agreement will support the Jordan Breast Cancer Program and KHCF’s efforts to improve primary care services for non-communicable diseases for both Jordanians and Syrian refugees, by implementing cancer awareness and prevention-related activities with women in several governorates.
Princess Ghida expressed her appreciation for the strategic partnership with both Spanish Cooperation and the EU Regional Trust Fund, and for their role in supporting Jordan, stating: “We appreciate the generous support given to improve the health of women in Jordan and raise awareness about the importance of prevention in the fight against cancer.”
The European Union Ambassador, H.E. Maria Hadjitheodosiou, stressed the importance of early detection and access to treatment for women to “eliminate the fear and taboo associated with cancer. The European Union is keen on assuring that all women and girls in Jordan are provided with the needed support to help them detect a life-threatening disease, so that it can be successfully treated with early screening, diagnosis and treatment. Therefore, we hope that this project, which involves the local community in raising awareness and creating behavioral change, will succeed in reaching the wider community and contribute to health equity in Jordan.”
Health equity including women’s access to healthcare is a challenge everywhere and Jordan is not the exception. To raise community awareness, change social behaviors and advocate for better breast cancer screening and early detection are the spearhead of an intervention aiming at improving the access to basic healthcare for women. Spain, as part of the EU, and as close and committed partner to Jordan firmly believes that working together with Jordanian civil society and authorities is the best way forward in order to progress on strengthening public services for all and address the effects of the Syrian crises”. stated Ambassador of Spain to Jordan Mrs. Aránzazu Bañón Dávalos.
